Steal Her Hairstyle – Zooey Deschanel

Now that Christmas is just a fortnight away, it’s perfectly acceptable to try and cram in as many festive films as possible before the big day. As long as you don’t forget Elf, which seems to have become a modern classic since its release in 2003. In fact, it’s so popular that most major towns and cities are having public screenings of the movie this year.

If you haven’t seen it, just know that the combination of comedian Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel – as a delightfully deadpan shop assistant – is a real winner. You can’t go wrong with Elf if you’re looking for a cosy, winter warmer of a film. Sadly, Deschanel is set to have a bit of a turbulent Christmas. The actress is currently embroiled in a bitter lawsuit with her former manager.

On the bright side, she also released a new Christmas-themed album as part of her musical duo ‘She and Him.’ So, it’s not all doom and gloom in the Deschanel camp. And, of course, this original ‘manic pixie dream girl’ has been looking as glam as ever lately.

The Pinwheel Hairstyle

The New Girl star definitely has a signature style. She’s known for wearing her hair in quite retro ‘dos, with a subtle hint of beehive backcombing. This usually means a half up, half down look, with a bun at the back and loose curls at the bottom. Or, when she’s on the red carpet, things can get a little more intricate. Check out this lovely pinwheel style, which has been created by dividing the hair and coiling the top section around into a twisted bun.

The Owl Whisperer

Deschanel tends to be pictured with really structured, carefully coiffured styles. Even the classic New Girl ‘do has a lot of shape and definition, thanks to that heavy fringe. Every so often, though, we get a chance to see her relax a little and settle into a looser, more casual look. If you want your natural curls to look as good as hers, you’ve to put some proactive work into conditioning and moisturising. While you’re kicking back on the couch with a Christmas film, why not try out one of the super cool banana hair masks that we shared earlier this week?

The Emily Strange Hair Do

There’s more than a hint of Emily Strange here; the gothic comic book character with the iconic bangs. Perhaps it’s just the porcelain skin that does it because Deschanel comes across as quite a sunny personality – you’d have to be to work with prankster Will Ferrell. If you want to create this really heavy, blunt fringe, you need quite thick hair. The good news is that you can cheat your way to volume either by wearing full hair extensions or by adding a clip-in fringe. We recommend blow drying after a shampoo to really brush some body into your tresses.

The Throwback

Time for a little blast from the past now, seeing as it is a Thursday. Nobody really remembers Deschanel when she had much shorter, pixie style hair because her long, heavy locks have become so synonymous with her characters. It is a surprise to be reminded of how striking she looked. The asymmetric cut is a little Parisian, but also a little bit anime. Scarlet Johannsson should watch out; Zooey was rocking the original Ghost in the Shell style a long time ago!
