At the end of another year, it’s always fun to look ahead and start planning for future hair and makeup trends. If 2016 was the year of contouring and balayage highlights, where will the next 12 months take us? Interestingly, word on the grapevine is that things won’t change quite as fast as you might expect.
For example, balayage is set to continue its dominance of hair salons from here to Tinsel Town. The trend will stick around but in a new form. Ash highlights are the big thing now, so it’s out with the chocolate tones and in with icy blondes and silver shades. Long bangs are having a revival too, so now is the perfect time to start growing yours.
Keep reading to find out which long hair looks will be huge in 2017 and how you can make them work for you.
Scarves and Wraps
This is one trend that we can definitely get behind, if only because it means less work on those cold winter mornings when intense styling is the last thing on your mind. Also, it’s always a good idea to let your tresses recover during the week, with at least one tong or iron free day. So, the popularity of hair scarves and wraps is a welcome development for 2017. Just pile your hair (and any unwashed extensions) into a messy bun and pretty it up with the addition of a cute, colourful fabric tie. If you’ve got long bangs, style them into a slight side sweep for a pretty awesome fifties vibe.
Ash Balayage
Ash balayage highlights work in much the same way as the ones that we’ve been seeing on celebrities and catwalks all year. The difference is in the choice of colour. Trendsetters are now swapping rich, sunkissed brunette to blonde transitions for colder shades. This means ash tones, silver gradients, and platinum colours so dazzling that you’d swear they were glittering in the light. It is a harder look to pull off and it is best suited to those with quite warm skin tones. That is unless you mind the pale waif look. Hey, it works for Gwen Stefani!
Braided Top Knots
If you’re searching for a new way to show off your clip in hair extensions, you’ll be glad to know that tall, intricate braids and buns will be huge in 2017 too. Celebrities like Hailee Steinfeld are already all over this trend. The Edge of Seventeen star is a big fan of combining braids and buns, to create wicked braided top knots. There are a lot of different ways to do it, but the simplest technique is to start a single French braid. Style outwards, from your face to the back of your head. When you’ve got a complete braid, coil it up high to form a topknot or around into a neatly piled bun.
No Heat Styling
For girls with dry or damaged hair, 2017 will be a great opportunity to bounce back and get your locks fighting fit again. The best way to do this is to cut down on the heat based styling (straightening, curling, blow drying, etc.), in favour of less intensive styles. It is all about embracing your natural strengths. If you’re a curly girl, focus on definition and fighting frizz, rather than battling those gorgeous curves and waves. If you’re a straight up and down gal, count yourself lucky and try some low maintenance styles or experiment with a fringe.
