At the tender age of 16, Claire Danes was one of the most recognisable stars on the planet. After starring as Juliet in the Baz Lurhmann adaptation of the classic Shakespeare play, the director praised her natural style and dubbed her ‘the Meryl Streep of her generation.’
These would be remarkable words for anybody to hear, but for the teenage Danes, they would also turn out to be prophetic. The actress went on to become one of the most beloved stars of US film and TV and can now count roles in The Hours, Terminator 3, Stardust, and Shopgirl among her most prominent appearances.
She is, of course, now extremely well known for her role as Carrie Mathison, in Homeland. And, as season five of the hit US drama is soon to hit our screens, the ClipHair style team take a look at some of her finest hairstyles.

The Breakout Star
Around the time when Romeo and Juliet was released and Claire Danes was becoming more than just ‘that girl from my So Called Life,’ she was sporting a hairstyle that we’ve never really seen her rock again since. Well, apart from the time when Carrie Mathison had to dye her blonde locks to go undercover, the actress has always stuck to her lighter roots. Yet, this darker auburn colour and angular cut bring out the colour of her eyes and her porcelain skin.

The Relaxed Curl
For a while, Danes seemed to switch up her reddish brownish tresses for much lighter (almost bleach blonde) tones. Whilst she always looked crazy glamourous out on the red carpet, going too light tends to make the star look far too pale. We much prefer her when she sticks to a more natural shade of blonde and lets her quirky features shine beneath a relaxed and casual curl. The parted fringe keeps the style from looking more ‘off duty star’ than soccer mum.

The Signature Flick
Once again, Danes has pretty much stuck to the styles which she knows suits her. We think that is actually a very clever move – find what makes you look hot and stick with it. This slightly shorter, slightly choppier look is rather fresh and funky, thanks to the slight flick at the ends. It could be called a lob, by today’s standards, because it frames the face and skims the collarbone. If you want to steal this style, but your tresses are a bit too short at the moment, pick up a clip in hair extension and carefully style the ends into a little lift.

The All Action Chick
As Carrie Mathison, Clare Danes has perfected the art of the ‘ugly cry’ – or so the media are calling it. It’s lucky then that her hair never looks anything short of gorgeous. This action chick has come a long way from being that awkward 15 year old on My So Called Life, but her public appearances are just as intriguing and elegant. This simple and pared down lob features warm blonde highlights which are ideal for her complexion and an angular off centre part which frames her face and brings out that winning smile.
